Linda at the Visitor Center at Pearl Harbor. We were there to visit the USS Arizona Memorial.

She's looking at a 3-dimensional map of the island of Oahu, where Pearl Harbor is located. This shot was taken from the "west," the direction from which Japanese aircraft attacked the island on December 7, 1941. The white disks on the map (which exaggerates the height of the mountains) are the places they hit.

The memorial over the Arizona (in a rather large,to-scale model). Very cool. Very sad. Entirely moving and profound for our party of five.

7 Dec 2006: it has been nearly one year since my visit to the Pearl Harbor museum and memorial. Hardly one day has past that I haven't remembered this sharply... it was such a deep, moving experience.

SAN FRANCISCO FILM FESTIVAL- SLEEP DEALER director ALEX RIVERA ---

ok ADDA rarely is impressed with films, much less their directors, so when ADDA saw a 'science fiction' film set in MEXICO ...he decided to take a chance and expand his horizons....

omg...well, ADDA was BLOWN AWAY by this incredible original film by a FIRST TIME DIRECTOR, ALEX RIVERA...

ADDA took these photos...and ran to the developer so that the director could autograph one of the photos...so, you know ADDA loved this film

yes, after 34 years of going to the film festival ...its always wonderful to be JAW DROPPED IMPRESSED by a film.

ADDA is NOT a butt kisser autographer seeker, BUT in this case, GEORGE LUCAS move over....this film was incredible (you have heard of ADDA's STAR WARS secret....yes, ADDA was at the FIRST showing of STAR WARS in SAN FRANCISCO -bargin matinee at the CORNET-and ADDA saw GEORGE LUCAS at the CUBA RESTURANT , where ADDA with his bizarre moustache/beard turned beet red ...so like, was ADDA really GEORGE LUCAS' inspiration for DARTH MAUL...????--

anyway, did ADDA go off on another tangent...

SLEEP DEALER was incredible...it restored ADDA's faith in SCIENCE FICTION movies and the creativity of a FIRST TIME feature director...(ok, he's gawd damn cute as a button too...and witty and intelligent...and politically cool ...and socially aware......and...and...)

The film will be in limited release soon, and ADDA gives it HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED RECOMENDATION ...something ADDA has only done with a few of the 49 films he saw at the SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

35. terminator killed salvation

..............................

sal-va-tion (noun)
1. the act of saving or protecting from harm, risk, loss, destruction, etc.
2. the state of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
3. a source, cause, or means of being saved or protected from harm, risk, etc.
4. Theology. deliverance from the power and penalty of sin; redemption.

..............................

If we're to believe the title of the film TERMINATOR SALVATION is indicative of its true meaning, then the protagonists in this movie should be saved from something, right? It sounds simple enough - Humans are provided salvation from the machines in this newest installment of the Terminator saga. The problem is, no such savior exists - for them or for this film. I wanted to like this movie so much. I really did. I am an enormous Terminator fan. I must have seen the first film at least 30 times and I always felt that TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY was revolutionary for its time. But TERMINATOR SALVATION lacks the bone-chilling clairvoyance of its predecessors. That is the true charm of Terminator after all - changing the future by altering the past. I still remember Kyle Reese's revelation of humanity's doomed future in T1 and the machines in those original films feeling so cold and calculating. That charm is all but lost in this franchise re-start. Director McG does a fair job at attempting to sustain our attention, but in the end, his version is nothing but a hollow shell.

Let's start with the acting. We pretty much know what we are going to get from Christian Bale. Whether patrolling the streets of Gotham or staring down fire-breathing dragons, we know Bale is going to deliver something strikingly intense. His adult version of John Connor has the just the proper amount of tortured hero in him. Bale understands the war and the importance of his family's survival. McG, unfortunately doesn't provide the necessary soul to bring it all together, but we'll review McG's performance later. A new character, Marcus Wright, takes the forefront in this film. He is played by Sam Worthington. Wright is really the culmination of the entire Terminator saga and his very existence sheds a whole new light on the advancement of the machines in Connor's war-torn Skynet-controlled future. Wright's relevance to this story is compelling, but it fails to provoke the types of emotion I am sure McG would like it to. It is close, but veiled by a layer of Hollywood that I couldn't shake while watching this. I don't mean to pick apart every detail, but in my estimation, a truly good film captures you in all ways, not just some - and TERMINATOR SALVATION has some gaping holes that I could not ignore. Final words on acting, Anton Yelchin (Chekov from the current Star Trek cinematic masterpiece) is amazing as the young Kyle Reese. Yelchin is one of those young actors who the silver screen just eats up. Cheers to the youngster. Also notable is Michael Ironside as General Ashdown, but for completely opposite reasons. This is not 1984 - Ironside should not be shouldering the role as antagonist. His believability went out the window decades ago. I question Warner Bros' logic in bringing him on. I only pick on him because he reeks of B-rate movie.

Director McG, of Charlie's Angels' fame, is way over his head on this one. I felt like he pulled out every Hollywood blockbuster stunt his mind could think of, but it was one inch shy of really compelling. The movie lacked soul. It didn't move me to any emotion I'm sure he intended to illicit. I didn't feel like the machines were any threat, and what was the purpose of herding the humans? They didn't hint at any gene testing or creation of a human-bred army. That was useless to the story other than to provide the backdrop for a daring hostage rescue finale. And the prisoners were freed so easily - where were the guards? If Skynet was as intelligent as I assume them to be, no human would have gotten anywhere near Skynet's headquarters without being sliced to shreds. Just a convenience to the plotline I guess.

Like I mentioned, Marcus Wright's story was somewhat interesting, but it didn't punch me in the gut like it should have. McG had his actors say all the right things. He even brought in Oscar-nominee regular Helena Bonham-Carter in a pivotal role, but even that couldn't ignite this film. Something I notice in some of these younger directors is there need to provide us with marquee scenes to tell all of the story rather than building something more real and lasting through subtext and thoughtful-character building. McG has no feel for subtleness and suggestion but chooses instead to bring the hammer to everything. He should spend some time in Hong Kong where their directors have great success balancing action with story. I wanted so much to care about the supporting characters too, but I was lost in the painful plain-ness of the film.

15. leebretooth (wolverine movie review below)

I was asked so much this morning at the office about X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, which I saw last night, that I have decided to write a proper review. Hope you have a sandwich because this might get kind of long. Beware some spoilers may be included.

Before I begin, let me say that X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE was a fun film to watch. It had some great moments and the scenery was vivid and ambient. The cinematography was incredible and the colors and tone of the film I felt were spot-on.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE really should have been entitled X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE AND FRIENDS or X-MEN IV. There were so many supporting characters in the film I stopped keeping track 15 minutes into the movie. And each of them had their own scene and mini-plotline. I appreciated the attempt to infuse the film with more muties to drive action figure sales and give kids more options for favorites, but the essence of this movie got buried beneath it. I know many of the supporting characters were integral to the Weapon X period in Wolvie’s past, but they by no means defined him. I don’t know if they thought Wolverine’s torturous back story couldn’t carry the film on its own or what - but I can’t blame it entirely on the overuse of supporting characters. The failures of this film fall solely on two people – the director, Gavin Hood and, yes, sorry to say the film’s star, Hugh Jackman.

Let me explain.

Gavin Hood seems to be a good action director. His past films include KICKBOXER 5, HUMAN TIMEBOMB and OPERATION DELTA FORCE 2 & 3, which are clear household classics. Errr. His understanding of Logan’s back story is limited and somewhat clouded. I’ll forgive the fact that he had to keep the film in the PG category and was pressed by Marvel to appeal to wide audiences. I’ll even forgive his drastic deviations from Barry Windsor-Smith’s classic tale of Wolverine’s beginnings. But what I wont forgive is his complete saturation of Wolverine’s essence. Make no mistake, prior to his dealings with Professor X, Logan was a killer. He was a gifted hunter and a cold-blooded animal. He was the best at what he did, which was track and kill. In fact, I would argue the Wolverine we saw in the first X-Men film (directed perfectly by Bryan Singer) was much more ferocious than this incarnation. All I saw this time around was a man with metal claws.

While Hood may have been pulling the strings, many of the faulty decisions surrounding Wolverine’s character were made by Hugh Jackman. If you remember, when Jackman was first cast as Wolverine in X-Men I, he was a little-known Australian actor who no one in the U.S. had heard of. He took risks in those early X-Men films and it was convincing. Now, after stateside commercial successes like AUSTRALIA and the like, Jackman might have treated this character much like he does many of his other leading-man roles. I enjoy watching Jackman onscreen as Wolverine. He has all the looks and intensity to drive this character, but in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, he has lost all his rage, all his hatred and the animal within. Even when he thought Sabretooth murdered his woman, I never fully believed he cared enough to seek real vengeance.

I am not saying this film is horrible, or even bad. There are gems in this movie that will remain with me for a long time. One of those is Gambit, portrayed by Taylor Kitsch, who turns in a solid performance as the energy charging, card playing cajun. The other is Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth/Victor Creed (see my photo above). From the opening moments of this film, I felt like Schreiber stole the show. He was so convincing as the bloodthirsty Sabretooth that literally he made Wolverine look like a pussy cat in every scene they were in together. Liev grasped Creed’s character with both hands and dove in completely, giving viewers something to cheer for during this film. I was proud that someone with Schreiber's acting acumen would take this franchise seriously and bring all of his subtle talents as an actor to this film. I can’t say enough about how good his performance was. Without him, this film would have been even flatter than it already was.

Ah! Now I know what this film should have been called……

X-MEN ORIGINS: SABRETOOTH

Go see it and tell me what you think.

‘nuff said!
